Historical Background

Immigrants constitute 8.5% of the Belgian population, and the foreign-born population in the U.S. is at 12% and rising. Belgium officially has maintained a “zero-migration policy” since 1974, while the U.S. has long been known as the land of immigration — but today both countries are facing an influx of immigration along with controversial questions about how to incorporate the newcomers into their societies.

US-Belgium Cultural Crossing is administered by CDS International, Inc. and the King Baudouin Foundation. The program is under the sponsorship of the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs of the U.S. Department of State.
